Travelling by bicycle is an enjoyable way of getting from A to B but also fun and great for improving fitness levels. The weather is the biggest reason people give for not cycling more but with the right preparation and cycling equipment there is less reason to avoid cycling for fear of what the weather might bring.

Traffic is another reason people give for not using a bicycle for fitness and pleasure but if you have a car why not take your bike to a different area where traffic is not a problem. Many country parks have cycles routes and tracks which allow you to see nature at its best and get some exercise on your journey. Many parts of the country that are off the beaten track have little through traffic and can be wonderful areas for cycling around.
Bicycle carriers and racks are available to fit most cars and can carry one, two or more bicycles securely to somewhere you can enjoy the pleasures of cycling without the worry of busy traffic. Prices vary a lot but you can get a very good cycle carrier from around £20 for a cheap but perfectly adequate cycle holder. When you think how this small expenditure can increase the pleasure and value for money you get from your bicycle it makes you wonder why you didn't get one before. Cycling is easy on level ground and smooth surfaces but hills are harder work. For fitness training and exercise you want to feel you have done some exercise so a bit of hill cycling is great for getting the blood pumping and the leg muscles working. A good session of cycling around the countryside is a lot more satisfying than spending an hour in the gym and it gives you the chance to see more of the countryside in your local area.
If you just want to use your cycle to get some shopping then you should invest in a cycle basket or cycle panniers to avoid the temptation to have a carrier bag swinging from the handlebars. There is a good choice available from the good old fashioned but very practical handbar basket to front and rear racks that can also take pannier bags and cycle touring equipment.
